BANGIN THE DRUM – 11 year old Thomas making dad proud

There is definitely something magical about the bond of a father and son while on the water. Especially when the son is bringing big fish over the Gunwale one after the other. Today, young Thomas of 11 years, beat the ever lovin breaks off the Drum! His dad would hold the rod up for him and Thomas would crank away! He was so excited about fighting the fish that the large, slow rollers didn't bother him in the least. Wayne was telling me that Thomas would likely end up sea sick pretty quick based on previous trips out. Luckily, rods were getting slammed not even five minutes after setting up the spread. Little man was on the job every time a rod gave even the slightest twitch! Most of the time the younger kids are skittish about touching the fish but not this guy! He would bear hug them big fish and get covered up in slime without a care in the world. He was a trooper. Dad was very proud of him and you could tell that this wasn't going to be a one time thing for these two.

The Drum were biting frozen, split Blue Crab. Everybody was wiped out on live Blues but, I always have a chest freezer stocked with frozen bait for this very situation. The Drum didn't mind in the slightest. I used the usual hand tied Dropper rigs on heavy tackle. 6/0 Owner Circle Hooks, 50 pound mono leader and bank sinkers ranging from 6oz on up to 12oz. Save the money and go with mono leader. Once you get past 10 pounds or so there is little added abrasion protection far as I'm concerned.
