It's been a busy April. The Inlet is busting at the seems with big Reds, Slot Reds, Drum, Sheepshead, Spanish Mackerel and now, big Sharks. Not just the usual Black Tips and Bonnet Heads but Sandbar Sharks as well. The Menhaden schools are starting to show up pretty thick around the Hannah Park Poles. We were able to black out the live wells with a single cast. I was surprised to see the schools bunched up so thick already.
The Slot Reds are abundant around the tips of both the north and south rocks. We did best around the outside tip of the south on the ladder half of the out going tide. We toss Sheepshead jigs baited with live Shrimp. All I do is work the jigs with the rod tip up and bounce the jig on the bottom while working the Shrimp back to the boat. You can limit hang ups by rigging the Shrimp weedless. Simply insert the jig down through the top of the Shrimps tail, once the point of the hook pokes through bottom of the tail, turn the hook around and bury it in the Shrimps belly. Just like anything else, nothing is full proof but this definitely cuts back on the snags.
The big breeder Black Drum are still around. The bite is already showing signs of slowing with this rapidly warming water. Today, the water temps were holding at 70 degrees. You know what that means, time for Manta Ray craziness on the beach. The Drum are still hear though and I mostly find the consistent bite on the outside tip of the submerged north row. The fish are also plentiful past(East) the red bell buoy. Get them now because they will be gone soon.
The Bull Reds are about the hottest I've ever seen them in the Inlet right now. We've been on them just as heavy this week as we have during the spawn up river. It's crazy. The ticket to getting on more than you'll ever want lies with the ole trusty Pogy(Menhaden). Load the live well at the beach and head to the deep trough inside the north row. 50-80 feet of water is where they are thickest. You'll be hammered by Sharks as well.
The Sharks are starting to fire up already.... I was hoping for a few weeks reprieve so we could get a couple Tarpon to the boat before the Black Tips arrived. As of right now, the Black Tips are here but they are the smaller ones. The real problem are the Sandbar Sharks. I've never really seen quite so many but this year, they are all over the place. Fine by me though. Sharks are good charter business All Sharks were released. No, the Sandbar Shark was NOT harvested.
