Dialing in on Sheepshead

We knew this was going to be a tough day going into it. The forecast wasn't looking good Thursday night. We decided to head out later than I normally would to give the sun some time to warm things up a bit. We got to the ramp and it was blowin! I knew better but, just out of curiosity, we headed for the Inlet to see just how bad the conditions were out there. It wasn't long before we turned the boat around and headed up river. I decided to try some markers that have been productive in the past and they didn't disappoint. We put several smaller sized Sheepshead in the box. We got a lot of shorts as well that went back in the river. Eventually, the bite died off and we wound up trying a few more spots. The fish weren't chewing anywhere else that we hit and soon we decided to head for the ramp. We got near the ramp and I made a last second decision to have another look at the Inlet. The wind had slowed down quite a bit so it was worth a look. The decision paid off. We dropped the trolling motor in and went to work! The fish were ravenous! For the next hour we were either breaking off bruisers or bringing them over the gunwales. The fish in the Inlet have definitely improved in size. None of the Sheepshead out there were small. The temp started dropping again and soon we headed back in.

The water temperature has dropped a bit in the river. By 12 pm the surface temp was 58-59 degrees. I'm hoping we get another warm front soon to offset this dropping temperature. Fish were all caught on Fiddlers. We were using our usual Carolina Rig set ups on Medium tackle. Specifically, 3500 Penn, Spinfisher V's mounted on 7 foot Star, Stellar Lites. I just picked up 4 more combo's this week. These rods are work horses and take a beating. I couldn't recommend a better setup for the money.
