Our schedules hadn't been lining up very well so we were having some trouble deciding on a date. Friday I sent Henry a text with a few pics of slob Black Drum that we caught Wednesday and all of a minute later my phone rings. He proceeds to tell me about how hes on the water sitting in dense fog trying to film a show in the Panhandle and that those giant Drum in the photos were going to haunt him the rest of the day lol!
A few hours later he calls me again. Now he's saying that they've finished the show early and he wants to swing by Jax on Friday and do a last second show. It's Easter weekend and Marine Max has all their Boston Whalers at a boat show(FTF's boat sponsor) so the sponsor boat fell through. Now I'm scrambling to find somebody that may want to lend a whaler for us to use. No go.... if that's not bad enough, I'm trying to find another boat and captain to man a camera boat at the last second. Thank god for reliable friends. My ole buddy Ted cancels an offshore trip and steps up. He even offers to put Henry and his crew up in his beautiful home on the ICW for the night. That's two problems solved. well, it turns out Henry got the green light to use a different boat and we just used my Sea Hunt. Fine by me!
Henry shows up at the Mayport Ramp at 11:00am. We get all the equipment loaded up and head to the Jetty's. Bear in mind that we just had our first full moon the night before and we couldn't find live Blue Crabs anywhere. The only bait I could come up with were Frozen Blue Crabs and Large fresh Shrimp. Needless to say, I'm not liking the way this thing is looking. We get to our first spot and fish it for roughly an hour without a single sniff. We move to another spot and same deal. We move again, same deal.... Next thing we know, it's been 3 hours and nothing is biting. My phone starts ringing and the caller ID says Arlington Bait and Tackle. Bingo, my bait just came in! 2 dozen live Blues! I get on the Phone with Anna and she's headed to ABT. She heads back to Mayport Boat Ramp flying! I have Ted run his boat down there to meet her and before long, we have reliable bait in the boat. We switch out the frozen Bait for the new live Blues and set the spread back up. I went with 2 whole live blues hooked through a crab knuckle and 2 rods baited with split crabs.
It doesn't take long before one of the rods double over and Henry goes for it! Fish on! Line is ripping off the spool and Henry and Billy are going nuts! Some time passes and up pops a big ole Slimeball. The crew is flipping out and for the first time all morning things are looking up! we get 2 more and Henry says we have more than adequate footage for a show. Success! We all decide to link back up over at Teds place and beat down some Bar-B-Que and cocktales. What a day.
These guys were a blast to fish with. Henry and Captain Billy are some great guys. We are talking about doing another show in September. Looking forward to it. The show will air the 3rd week of May.
