GOING BIG IN 30 KNOT WIND – 10.5 pound Sheepshead, 27″ Trout x2 and much more….

Well it's my least favorite time of the year. The air is cold, the wind is blowing, and the river Red Fish aren't cooperating. Normally, I'll turn my attention to beating on the Porgy's but, conditions in the inlet are atrocious. That leaves Sheepshead and Sea Trout.

One thing you can always count on when it comes to Trout, if it's windy and cold out, they're biting. This week wasn't an exception. We caught more than we could keep count of. Mostly schoolie fish just under 15 inches but, some were nice fish. We did find a few monsters either at or just over 27 inches and 6.5 pounds. I lost one fish behind the motor that looked in the 30 inch club. Before we could get a net under her, the Rapala XRap shot out of her mouth, dang near hitting my right ear. That fish was a true monster. Very disappointing. The others we caught were averaging 18-22 inches and all fat. We only kept 8 that day because we kept catching over slot Trout. Great problem to have.

The Trout were hitting Rapala XRaps in Glass Ghost color pattern and Slayer SSB in Venise Glow and Gold Finga color patterns. I rig the SSB's weedless on weighted, Slayer, Penetrater hooks. How heavy depends on the depth and current you're fishing.
