We also took my neighbors son, Ian. The conditions were perfect. We had a favorable tide, the barometer was nice and high, the water in the Inlet has been clean and things were looking good.
We hit the beach first thing and blacked out the live well with perfect 4-5 inch Menhaden. Before long, we had our lines in the water. The action was immediate. Right off the bat, we had a nice slot Red in the boat. A few minutes later, the Jacks started chewing. After the kids caught a few of those, the Tarpon started showing up. The Mullet were coming out of the water all along the inside tip of the south Jetty. We were seeing them in all size ranges today. The schoolie Tarpon were tight to the rocks and the monsters were holding tight to the bottom in the deeper trough. It wasn't long before the first fish went tight on a line. I picked up the rig that went screaming and gave several hard hook sets to make sure we had a good connection and passed the rod over to Ronnie. That fish took off and made several big jumps! Ronnie was on top of the situation and handled the rod like he'd done this a hundred times already! He pointed the rod at the Tarpon every time she took to the air like a pro. After a few minutes, the fish started showing signs of tiring and I slipped on the Kevlar gloves. He got the fish boat side and I got my hands locked onto her lower jaw. Success, his first Tarpon was officially caught. We took some pictures and for the rest of the day he was glowing. We proceeded to jump several more Tarpon, 6 in all but, the rest didn't stay buttoned. Two of them were absolute monsters. Every bit of 130+ pounds.
Through the course of the morning we caught a number of other fish including keeper Sea Bass(3) some Nice Speckled Trout, Bull Reds, Slot Reds, Sharks and a few other not so memorable species We had a great time. The kids went home excited.
We were targeting the Tarpon on conventional gear in the 30-40 pound class. The reels were Accurate Fury 400's paired with 7 foot Star, Paraflex rods. The reels were spooled with 50 pound Ultracast. The rigs used were hand tied Droppers with 3 foot leaders made of 60 pound High Seas Flourocarbon. The hooks used were 5/0 Owner Circle Hooks. I prefer to use 5/0 circle hooks when using Menhaden. I find that they get eaten more consistently on a smaller hook. The bait also stays lively longer on a lighter hook.
The Tarpon tend to be most active during the first half of the out going tide. earlier in the morning the bite was on the surface and we made several hook ups on Flat lined Menhaden. As it got hotter, the fish were holding tight to the bottom and we started catching them on the Dropper Rigs.
