Hi all. My buddy called me who was vacationing on St. Simons Island, Ga. He wanted to drive to Jacksonville, and catch a red drum. I knew who to call immediately: Captain Steve from Madness Charters / Morocco Madness. We left Mayport boat ramp at 0800 and gathered bait on a local sandbar.
Captain Steve worked for our 2 dozen mullet with a 10 foot cast net 3/8 inch diameter netting. He got what we needed, so we made tracts to the little jetties. We had the last of the outgoing tide. We set anchor, put out baits and waited for the feeding frenzy.
We had 4 lines out: 2 live mullets (4-6 inches), one 1/4'd blue crab and some cut bait (mullet).
It wasn't 40 minutes before we had bent rods. Steve provided us with Torium 16's (size reels) matched to medium/ heavy conventional rods. We had to use 12 and 16 ounces of lead to hold bottom as the current was smoking. We utilized 6/0 circle hooks to safely release all fish boated.
The cut mullet is what they wanted today. That is the only bait that produced fish. We even had a 14 inch black sea bass inhale a 3 inch cubed cute bait. Well, once the fish started, they continued with a strong bite. We landed 3 fish in 30 minutes, all vented and safely released to maintain the sustainability of the species.
