Decided to try drop shotting 6 inch, Gulp, Swim Mullet this week. I was thinking maybe a Bull Red would inhale one suspended a foot off the bottom. We have plenty of current to make the lure swim stationary so the concept seemed legit enough. We did get a big take on the Gulp but we never got whatever hammered it to the boat. Im guessing a Red but who knows. A bit later the rig gets hit again and we pulled up the biggest dang Whiting I've ever seen. The thing weighed 2LBS, 4 ounces! This monster inhaled a 6" Gulp?! The Whiting fully swallowed the thing! By the end of the day, we get hit on the Gulp again and this time the fish is pulling pretty good. It's not taking drag but we're getting vicious head shakes. Next thing we know, up pops the biggest Trout any of us have ever seen. Another 6" Gulp fully engulfed. Unfortunately, this big female wasn't coming back from this and wouldn't revive. She was bleeding from the throat and was done. Instead of dumping a dead Trout, my client Arron decided to have the fish mounted. Brian(Fish Mounter) is on the job. We're actually having two mounts made of the fish You know I gotta have one!
Of course we weren't going to put all our cards on the table and go solely with Gulp. We had our usual Live bait, Blue Crab and cut bait out as well. My guests all caught the biggest Bulls of their lives(and then some) by noon. The tide was going slack and I took the crew over to Safe Harbor for some fine eating and we took a break. We finished off the day wearing out a few more Reds and everyone headed home to celebrate a good day on the water.
